Wright & Schulte’s Lawyers Have Recently Filed A Zimmer Durom Hip Lawsuit On Behalf Of A Woman Who Had To Undergo Risky Corrective Surgery To Remove And Replace The Allegedly Defective Durom Acetabular Component, Also Known As The Durom Cup
The medical device and product liability lawyers at Wright & Schulte have recently filed a Durom hip lawsuit against Zimmer Holdings, Inc. on behalf of an Ohio woman. This Zimmer Hip Replacement Lawsuit(Case No. 2:13-cv-513) was filed in the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of Ohio, Eastern Division. In addition to alleging defects with Zimmer’s Durom Cup caused the plaintiff to develop painful, debilitating complications, this Durom hip lawsuit also contends that Zimmer failed to warn the public about the possible risk of failure associated with its hip implant device.

Zimmer Hip Replacement Lawsuit
According to court documents associated with this Zimmer Hip Replacement Lawsuit (Case No. 2:13-cv-513), the plaintiff underwent surgery to have a Zimmer Durom Cup implanted in her right hip in June 2007. Soon after receiving this implant, the plaintiff began developing painful complications that impaired her mobility and soon led to unrelenting pain. By 2012, the plaintiff’s surgeon informed her that her Durom Cup had prematurely experienced an “obvious failure” and that she would need to undergo invasive revision surgery, which took place in July 2012. Despite the removal and replacement of the failed Zimmer Durom Cup, the complaint alleges that, to this day, the plaintiff still lives with impaired mobility, hip pain and an impaired quality of life due to the defective Durom Cup.
Zimmer Durom Cup Failure Rate
More than 12,000 Durom Cups have been implanted in U.S. patients since Zimmer first introduced this hip implant in 2006, and since then, a number of patients – like the woman in this Zimmer lawsuit – have reportedly developed serious complications that have necessitated risky revision surgery. As patient complaints began accumulating, a world-renowned orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Lawrence Dorr, conducted his own research into the failure rates of Zimmer Durom Cups and other hip implant devices. The results of this study, which was conducted at The Arthritis Institute at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles, were published in 2010 and found that approximately 23 percent of the patients involved in the study had experienced failure of their Durom Cup and that an additional 19 percent of patients displayed signs of impending Durom Cup failure. At the time of publishing these results, Dr. Dorr had warned Zimmer of these significant Durom Cup failure rates, as the company had previously publicized a Durom Cup failure rate of 5.7 percent. Additionally, Dr. Door attributed such a high rate of failure to the fact that the Durom Cup was separating from (rather than fusing to) hip bones. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3018189/ September 2010]
Despite the compelling finds of Dr. Dorr’s research, to date, Zimmer has not issued a recall on its Durom Cup hip implants, nor has the company admitted to the increased risk of failure that these devices reportedly carry. Instead, as the complaint alleges, Zimmer continues to blame Durom Cup failures on the surgical methods used to implant the device, rather than defects with the design of the device.
