Allegations of Bladder Mesh Sling Injuries
According to court documents for these 18 transvaginal mesh lawsuits, all of the plaintiffs in these cases had some type of mesh sling surgically implanted to try to treat their pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and/or stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Following surgery, however, the plaintiffs developed painful complications that became so bad that they needed revision surgery to have the bladder sling removed. Some of the serious complications that have been linked to mesh implants are alleged to include urinary pain, pain during intercourse, vaginal scaring, mesh erosion through the vaginal lining, an increased risk of infection, puncturing of the blood vessels/bowels/bladder and recurrence of SUI. FDA Warns Consumers About The Risk Of Serious Vaginal Mesh Complications
In July 2011, the FDA issued a national warning to alert the public that transvaginal mesh complications are not rare. Specifically, after reviewing more than 100 bladder mesh studies, the FDA found that about 10 percent of women with a mesh sling have developed or would develop serious complications. The FDA also warned the public that many of the reported bladder mesh sling injuries required risky corrective surgery and possibly the removal of the mesh sling within 12 months of implantation. In the worst cases, multiple revision surgeries were needed to try to treat the serious injuries allegedly caused by defective vaginal mesh.
Additionally, the FDA’s 2011 bladder mesh sling warning pointed out that women with vaginal mesh were more likely to develop complications than those who had undergone traditional surgery for POP and SUI and that bladder mesh slings may not be effective at relieving the symptoms of prolapse.
