Serious Injuries Alleged In Vaginal Mesh Lawsuits

In order to treat their pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and/or their stress urinary incontinence (SUI), the plaintiffs in these transvaginal mesh lawsuits had Boston Scientific’s vaginal slings implanted in their lower abdomen. Following implantation, however, both plaintiffs reportedly developed debilitating, painful vaginal mesh complications and some irreversible injuries that significantly impacted their quality of life. Pelvic and urinary pain, pain during sexual intercourse, vaginal scaring, mesh erosion through the vaginal lining, an increased risk of infection, vaginal scarring, perforation of the blood vessels/bowels/bladder and recurrence of SUI are among some of the severe injuries that have been linked to Boston Scientific’s mesh slings.

The plaintiffs in these recently filed mesh lawsuits include an Ohio woman who had the Uphold Vaginal Support System and the Soyyx SIS System implanted in August 2010 (Case No. 2:13-cv-11757) and a Nebraska woman who had Obtryx Transobturator Mid-Urethral Sling System implanted in June 2011 (Case No. 2:13-cv-11758).

Severe Vaginal Mesh Complications Are Not Rare, Warns The FDA

The FDA issued a national warning in July 2011, alerting the public that bladder mesh complications are not rare and that, for some women, implantation of vaginal mesh was no more effective than traditional surgeries. In fact, after analyzing the results of more than 100 transvaginal mesh studies, the FDA found that about 1 in every 10 women with these devices have developed or would develop serious injuries that would require corrective surgery and removal of the vaginal mesh within 12 months of implantation. In the worst cases, women reportedly needed multiple revision surgeries to repair the extensive injuries caused by bladder mesh slings.

Other important points included in the 2011 FDA vaginal mesh warning were that vaginal mesh implants had greater risks of complications than traditional surgery for treating POP and SUI and that vaginal mesh may not even be sufficient at alleviating the symptoms of prolapse.
