Agrisure Viptera GMO Corn Seed
The product at the center of Syngenta lawsuits is known as Agrisure Viptera GMO corn seed. Syngenta genetically modified this seed so that the resulting plants will produce proteins that resist pests. China, a major market for U.S. agricultural products, has not approved Agrisure Viptera, though Syngenta did apply for approval in 2010.
Because of China’s decision to reject U.S. corn tainted by Agrisure Viptera, shipments to that country were off by 85% during the first seven months of 2014 compared to the same period in 2013. Corn prices have dropped nearly 60% from their peak in 2012, in part due to the lack of export demand.
Syngenta GMO corn seed lawsuits filed by Cargill and other big agribusinesses claim that Agrisure Viptera can now be found throughout the U.S. corn supply chain. As such, Cargill says it can no longer sell U.S. corn to China. Cargill’s complaint claims that Syngenta’s sale of the unapproved seed exposed it to more than $90 million in losses.
Another Syngenta lawsuit filed on behalf of Trans Coastal Supply Co. claims that the attempt to commercialize the Agrisure Viptera seed was motivated by greed. The lawsuit also asserts that Syngenta’s behavior has the potential to destroy U.S. exports of corn to China. Trans Coastal is alleged to have sustained losses around $141 million.
