Thousands Of Talcum Powder Cancer Lawsuit Filings Allege Women Developed Ovarian Cancer After Prolonged Use Of Talcum Powder.

Talcum powder lawsuits continue with a new complaint filed against Johnson & Johnson and Walgreens on behalf of an Illinois woman who alleges developing ovarian cancer after using talcum powder products for more than 30 years. Johnson & Johnson (J&J) is defending itself against 3,100 similar lawsuits nationwide over its Baby Powder and Shower to Shower products. The lawsuits allege routine use of talcum powder products in the genital area can cause women to develop ovarian cancer. The talcum powder complaints also claim J&J failed to warn consumers about the cancer risk.

The new talcum powder cancer lawsuit, filed in Cook County Circuit Court, states the Illinois woman routinely purchased J&J’s Baby Powder and Shower to Shower from Walgreens. The complaint claims J&J and Walgreens share an office in Buffalo Grove, Illinois to “jointly analyze, assess, and strategize” the best way to promote its baby powder products and influence consumers to purchase them at Walgreens. The lawsuit asserts that more than 20 studies conducted over 45 years suggest an ovarian cancer risk associated with talc-based products. The lawsuit alleges J&J and Walgreens were aware of the cancer risks but continued to promote talcum powder products as safe for feminine hygiene use. The plaintiff was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2015 and is currently receiving treatment, according to the complaint. Talcum powder has been a popular product for decades because of its ability to absorb moisture, reduce friction and prevent rashes. For decades, women have used talcum powder in their genital area because of its moisture-absorbent abilities. However, studies have shown that talc particles can travel through the vagina, uterus, and fallopian tubes to the ovaries. The talc particles that reach the ovaries can result in the growth of ovarian cancer cells.

Talcum powder lawsuits alleging extended use of J&J’s Baby Powder and Shower to Shower in the perineal area causes ovarian cancer are pending in New Jersey’s Atlantic County Superior Court, Los Angeles County Superior Court, Superior Court of Delaware, and the U.S. District Court, District of New Jersey. J&J says it no longer owns Shower to Shower but owned the product when plaintiffs used the product.

Jury trials have already been held in the 22nd District Court in St. Louis, Missouri, where the majority of talcum powder lawsuits are filed. The first trial held in February 2016 resulted in a record $72 million award for the family of an Alabama woman who used talcum powder for 30 years and died of ovarian cancer in 2015. Another trial followed in May 2016 in which a South Dakota woman who alleged her talcum powder use led to a stage 1 ovarian cancer diagnosis was awarded $55 million. In October, a California woman who had developed ovarian cancer after decades of talcum powder use was awarded $70 million.
