Da Vinci Robot Lawsuit Filed In New Jersey Is One Of More Than 30 Pending Against Intuitive Surgical, Inc. That Allege Serious Injuries Due To The Da Vinci Surgical System
The Da Vinci robot lawsuit lawyers at Wright & Schulte LLC are disturbed by allegations made in the most recent Da Vinci robot lawsuit, which was filed in New Jersey federal court last month. According to a report from NJ.com, the lawsuit claims that a 45-year-old woman sustained severe and permanent injuries after electricity jumped from a Da Vinci instrument into her body. The report further notes that Intuitive Surgical, Inc. was recently criticized by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for failing to provide doctors with adequate instructions regarding the cleaning of Da Vinci instruments, something the agency said could result in electrical arcing and injuries to patients.
Wright & Schulte LLC is now offering free personal injury lawsuit consultations to victims of alleged Da Vinci robot complications, including those who suffered:
- Tears and/or burns of the intestines
- Punctured blood vessels
- Punctured and/or cut ureters
- Severe bowel injuries
- Vaginal cuff dehiscence
- Excessive bleeding
- Surgical burns
- Sepsis
- Peritonitis
- Death
Da Vinci Lawsuits
According to a regulatory filing issued by Intuitive Surgical in July, the company has been named in at least 33 Da Vinci lawsuits by plaintiffs who allege that defects in the Da Vinci and/or issues with the way Intuitive trains surgeons led to serious Da Vinci robot complications. Like the New Jersey lawsuit, many of these claims describe injuries that allegedly occurred due to electrical arcing.
According to Wright & Schulte LLC, news of the mounting litigation follows several other developments that have raised questions about the safety of the Da Vinci robot. In July, the company was sent an FDA Warning Letter after an inspection of its headquarters turned up several issues, including problems with the way it reported Da Vinci complications to the agency. That same month, Intuitive Surgical announced a recall for some Da Vinci instruments that may not have been properly tested at the factory. And in May, Intuitive Surgical warned its customers about an issue with its EndoWrist Monopolar Curved Scissors that could cause surgical burns in patients.
The FDA has also received 200 reports of serious Da Vinci complications, including burns, cuts, infections, and 89 deaths, since 2007, according to a recent NBC news report. The agency is now surveying doctors who use the robot to determine if the Da Vinci itself is causing the injuries.
