Consumers Complain Of Just For Men Hair Dye Allergic Reactions

Though it hit the market in 1987, the consumer news and advocacy organization Consumer Affairs is receiving reports that Just For Men hair dye is causing some users to experience chemical burns, blisters, and itching, the News Tribune writes.

In fact, one user wrote a comment on the Consumer Affairs website that though he applied the dye to beard according to the directions, he experienced a severe reaction. He wrote, “I had a burning sensation as well, and after rinsing it off, I thought I was fine. The next day, my face and neck had swollen up horribly. The following morning my skin had begun to weep as well, and I went to the ER. I was admitted immediately, as it looked horrible. They were concerned about my throat swelling shut. I am nearly 50 and do not have any allergies that I know of. Whatever is in this stuff is harsh. I needed steroids and Benadryl.”

Another consumer wrote that though they had been using the dye for over ten years, “in the past couple of weeks whenever I use it, there is a burning and itching. I’m going to switch to something less harsh,” he wrote.

According to the News Tribune, a representative for Combe Incorporated, the company that manufactures Just For Men, there has been no ingredient changes in the product for the last seven years. The representative told Consumer Affairs that men should do an allergy test by applying a small amount of the product to the inside of the elbow before using the product, “due to the fact that body chemistry can change at any one given time.”

Side Effects of Just For Men

Consumer Affairs says the warning label for Just For Men says that some men may experience negative symptoms including “Rapidly spreading skin rash, dizziness, faintness, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, tightness of chest, hives or swelling to eyes/face, blistering of skin or scalp weeping, seek immediate medical attention.”
