xarelto-bleeding-lawsuits-Wright-and-Schulte-LLCAs Xarelto lawsuits are being prepared for trial, federal and state courts are seeing a spike in the number of Xarelto lawsuit filings as the combined total of cases rise from 3,400 to 4,610. Bayer HealthCare AG and Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc. unit, are defendants in Xarelto complaints that purport the companies use misleading advertising that fails to warn of the blood thinner’s potentially life-threatening side effects that include blood clots, internal bleeding, gastrointestinal or brain hemorrhages that can lead to death.

There were 3,987 Xarelto complaints consolidated in the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Louisiana, according to the court’s statistics for February 16. U.S. District Judge Eldon Fallon, which is managing the Xarelto litigation, has ordered 40 Xarelto cases to be selected for discovery. Of the total, the parties are to choose four cases for trial by June 10. The first trial is scheduled for February 2017. In the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, 623 Xarelto side-effects claims are pending in multicounty litigation. The Xarelto cases in the mass tort group in Pennsylvania are in the pretrial process. “The courts’ statistics make it very clear that the spike in Xarelto lawsuit filings reflect the serious side-effects patients have experienced after taking the prescription blood thinner,” says Wright & Schulte LLC, which continues to speak with men and women across the country who believe they have suffered serious bleeding side effects due to using Xarelto. Xarelto (rivaroxaban) is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to reduce the risk of strokes, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and blood clots in patients who have undergone hip or knee replacement surgery. The blood thinner is also approved to prevent blood clots in patients with atrial fibrillation not caused by a heart valve problem. Xarelto was originally approved in July 2011 and achieved blockbuster status two years later with $2 billion in sales in 2013, Xarelto complaints note. Xarelto is popular among patients because regular blood monitoring is not required as it is with the blood thinner, warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven). However, warfarin uses vitamin K as a reversal agent should internal bleeding occur in patients. Xarelto does not have an approved antidote to reverse its effects should serious bleeding occur, according to the FDA.

According to court records, federal Xarelto side-effects lawsuits began to increase after May 2015 when Judge Fallon allowed bundling of Xarelto claims of more than one plaintiff and up to 100 plaintiffs to be filed in a single complaint as a way to minimize expenses for all parties. One bundled complaint, for instance, was recently filed on behalf of seven plaintiffs against Bayer and Janssen. The complaint named three plaintiffs from Alabama, Colorado and Georgia who died of severe internal bleeding in 2014 allegedly after being prescribed Xarelto. A plaintiff from Kentucky suffered a gastrointestinal bleed in February 2015 and a Pennsylvania resident suffered a gastrointestinal bleed in 2014 allegedly after being prescribed Xarelto. The complaint further alleges a Florida resident suffered internal bleeding in 2014, while a Pennsylvania resident suffered gastrointestinal bleeding in 2013, 2014 and January 2016.
