The rare strain of fungal meningitis has been linked to contaminated methlprednisone steroid injections that were prepared by the New England Compounding Center Inc. of Farmingdale, Massachusetts. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the injectable steroids, which are used to treat back pain, were shipped to 76 facilities in 23 states.

The New England Compounding Center recalled all of its products and voluntarily surrendered its license to operate on October 3, 2012, the CDC said. However, there are fears that the fungal meningitis outbreak could grow, as some 13,000 patients may have been treated with the recalled steroids. The incubation period for the illness is approximately one month. States that received the tainted steroids include: California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Texas, and West Virginia.

The strain of fungal meningitis associated with this outbreak – aspergillus – is not contagious, according to the CDC. So far, cases of meningitis have been reported in 10 states, including Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Tennessee, and Virginia. Of the 11 deaths associated with the outbreak, six occurred in Tennessee, three in Michigan, and one each in Maryland and Virginia.

According to the CDC, patients infected by this strain of fungal meningitis may experience headache, fever, nausea, and stiffness of the neck, as well as confusion, dizziness, and discomfort from bright lights. However, the Center noted that some patients might just have one or two of these symptoms. Anyone who recently received steroid injections to treat back pain should contact their doctors if they experience any problems that could be associated with meningitis.
