Wright & Schulte has filed two vaginal mesh lawsuits against Cook Medical, Inc. These cases contend the plaintiffs’ use of Cook’s allegedly dangerous vaginal mesh caused them to develop debilitating complications that ultimately required them to undergo risky revision surgery to remove the mesh slings.

Use of Defective Mesh Caused Serious Injuries, Mesh Lawsuits Allege

According to court documents for these bladder mesh lawsuits, both plaintiffs in these cases had some type of mesh sling made by Cook Medical, Inc. surgically implanted to try to treat their pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Following surgery, however, the plaintiffs began to experience debilitating complications that ultimately became so bad that the women needed revision surgery to have the Cook’s bladder sling removed. Some of the severe injuries that have been linked to Cook’s mesh slings include pelvic and urinary pain, pain during sexual intercourse, vaginal scaring, mesh erosion through the vaginal lining, an increased risk of infection, vaginal scarring, perforation of the blood vessels/bowels/bladder and recurrence of SUI.

The plaintiffs in these recently filed mesh lawsuits include an Iowa woman who had the Surgisis® EF Soft Tissue Graft implanted in October 2004 (Case No. 1:13-cv-00068 filed on July 9, 2013) and an Ohio woman who had the Surgisis® 4-Layer Tissue Graft implanted in August 2010 (Case No. 1:13-cv-00470 filed on July 18, 2013).

Severe Vaginal Mesh Injuries Are Not Rare, Warns the FDA

In July 2011, the FDA issued a national warning to alert consumers that transvaginal mesh complications are not rare. In fact, after analyzing the results of more than 100 bladder mesh studies, the FDA found that about 1 in every 10 women with bladder mesh have developed or would develop serious injuries that would require revision surgery and possibly even removal of the vaginal mesh within one year of implantation. In the worst cases, multiple revision surgeries were needed to try treat the extensive, severe injuries caused by bladder mesh slings.

Additionally, the FDA’s 2011 bladder mesh sling warning pointed out that women with vaginal mesh were more likely to develop complications than those who had undergone traditional surgery for POP and SUI and that bladder mesh slings may not be effective at relieving the symptoms of prolapse.
