Sioux City Study Highlights Dangers of Laundry Pods Which Are Now The Focus Of Lawsuits Involving Children Under 5 As Well As Senior Adults

laundry-pod-poisoning-lawsuitAs laundry pod lawsuits focus on young children who are injured due to exposure to laundry pods, a highly concentrated liquid detergent, Wright & Schulte LLC has learned that a study was conducted of the liquid laundry pods physical properties to determine what role they play in harming youngsters. Wright & Schulte LLC, which is representing families of children and senior adults in laundry pod lawsuits, against Tide and other liquid laundry manufacturers, who have been seriously and fatally injured from laundry pods, took note of the study, reported in the Sioux City Journal. The study was conducted by the medical director of the Sioux-City based Iowa Poison Control Center, who is also a toxicologist, and by a pharmacist.

The two-day study involved puncturing hundreds of single-load laundry pods, pouring the liquid detergents into a beaker and measuring them with a viscometer. The two researchers, wearing safety goggles and rubber gloves, examined differences in thickness and burst force. What they found were packets that contained thinner detergent took less force to open than packets that contained thicker detergents. In all, the process was “messy,” according to the medical director, because the packets burst “unpredictably” and the contents would shoot in different directions. The study was prompted, in part, by the increasing number of calls to poison control centers nationwide of exposure of children age 2 and under to laundry packets. So far this year, the Iowa Poison Control Center has received 105 calls involving young children being exposed to laundry detergent packets.

“Single load laundry packets may be convenient to use to wash clothes, but children are drawn to the multicolored product because it resembles candy to them,” says Wright & Schulte LLC, which is offering free legal consultations to families whose children or senior adults have be harmed by the products such as Procter & Gamble’s Tide Pods and Sun Products All Mighty Pacs.

Liquid Laundry Pod Poisoning

According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC), 7,184 calls have been fielded through July 31 to poison control centers nationwide regarding children 5 and under who were exposed to liquid laundry pods. The most recent figure is an 18 percent increase over the 6,046 calls recorded as of June 30. According to the AAPCC, some children who placed laundry pods in their mouths experienced such symptoms and conditions as:

• Burns, irritation, drooling in the mouth
• Excessive vomiting
• Wheezing
• Gasping
• Sleepiness
• Breathing problems serious enough to need a ventilator
• Corneal abrasions (scratches to the eyes)

The rise in the number of incidents involving children being injured by the products prompted Consumer Reports to announce in July that it was removing liquid laundry detergent pods from its list of recommended products.
