Report Comes as Questions Over the Safety of Robotic Surgery Continue to Mount.

Robotic-Hysterectomy-Lawsuit-ComplicationsThe robotic surgery lawsuit lawyers at Wright & Schulte LLC, an experienced personal injury law firm, are alarmed by a recent report detailing Da Vinci surgery complications that allegedly occurred during a robot-assisted hysterectomy. According to a report from KATU.com, a Portland, Oregon woman was left in horrible pain after undergoing a Da Vinci hysterectomy, but was unable to convince her doctors that anything was wrong. It was only months later, and after trying everything from physical therapy to acupuncture, that a CAT scan revealed that a Da Vinci instrument had been left in body. “If they would have just taken an X-ray right after the surgery, or really examined all of the instruments, it could have been prevented,” the patient said.

According to Wright & Schulte LLC, the report of the botched Da Vinci hysterectomy comes as Intuitive Surgical Inc., the manufacturer of the Da Vinci Surgical System, faces dozens of robotic surgery lawsuits over alleged Da Vinci robot complications. The Firm is now offering free Da Vinci robot lawsuit consultations to victims allegedly injured in a procedure involving the Da Vinci Surgical System, including those who suffered:

• Tears and/or burns of the intestines
• Punctured blood vessels
• Punctured and/or cut ureters
• Severe bowel injuries
• Vaginal cuff dehiscence
• Excessive bleeding
• Surgical burns
• Sepsis
• Peritonitis
• Death

According to Bloomberg News, the Da Vinci robot, which is used in some 1,300 hospitals, has recently been associated with a rising number of robotic surgery adverse event reports, including at least 70 deaths that have been reported to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) since 2009. The FDA is now surveying doctors who use the Da Vinci robot in an attempt to determine what might be responsible for the rising injury reports.

A growing body of evidence has also raised questions about the risks and benefits of Da Vinci surgery. Most recently, a study published in Obstetrics & Gynecology was unable to conclude that robot-assisted hysterectomy offered patients any additional benefits compared to traditional laparoscopy. The same study also found that women who undergo a Da Vinci hysterectomy might have a higher risk of developing post-operative pneumonia.

In March, the American College of Gynecologists (ACOG) advised its members that robotic-assisted hysterectomy should not be the first choice for most women in need of the procedure. In a statement, the group cited studies that have shown that using this expensive technology for routine surgical care does not improve patient outcomes.
