risperdal-gynecomastia-lawsuits-Wright-and-Schulte-LLCAs the lawyers at Wright & Schulte LLC keep abreast on pretrial proceedings underway in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas for Risperdal lawsuits complaints, they have learned that the number of claims alleging the Risperdal antipsychotic drug causes gynecomastia (abnormal breast growth) in males continue to increase. “The Risperdal lawsuits have been consolidated in the court’s mass tort program which enables the attorneys involved a more cohesive litigation process especially since the plaintiffs are located across the country”. The firm has learned through the court’s master case list, that there are currently 1,270 Risperdal lawsuits pending in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas as of February 23. After reviewing the court documents the firm has acknowledged that most if not all of the Risperdal gynecomastia lawsuits filed on behalf of boys and young men allege the anti-psychotic medication Risperdal caused them to developed excessive breast tissue and other serious side-effects, and in some instances, had breast removal surgery. Wright & Schulte LLC further comments that the Risperdal lawsuits purport that Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiary, Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc., failed to warn doctors and their patients about the risks of gynecomastia and other side-effects associated with Risperdal. The complaints further allege that Risperdal was marketed for use in children prior to receiving approval for this use from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The firm comments that “one of the more prevelant adverse reactions reported to the FDA by users of Risperdal is gynecomastia, which is the enlargement of male breasts that occurs due to the elevation of the female hormone, prolactin” The elevation persists the longer the medication is taken. According to Risperdal’s prescribing information, other side-effects of the drug include:

  • Anxiety
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Tremor
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Vomiting
  • Weight gain

The FDA did not approve Risperdal for use in children for any purpose until late 2006. Additionally, the FDA did not approve Risperdal for use in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis.

Wright & Schulte LLC further states that “In November 2013, Johnson & Johnson and Janssen agreed to pay more than $2.2 billion to resolve the criminal and civil cases brought against them by the DOJ after the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) accused Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc. of promoting Risperdal, Invega, another antipsychotic drug, and Natrecor, a drug to treat heart failure, as safe and effective for uses that were not approved by the FDA and paying kickbacks to physicians who prescribed the drugs” According to the DOJ website, Janssen pleaded guilty to marketing Risperdal to health care providers to treat psychotic symptoms of elderly dementia patients and agreed to pay a $400 million fine. Janssen also admitted to promoting Risperdal for use in children and individuals with mental disabilities. Janssen and its parent company agreed to pay $1.39 million to resolve the off-label marketing and kickbacks claims for Risperdal and Invega.

While Risperdal lawsuits contend that the medication causes gynecomastia in young males, Wright & Schulte discovered that a recent study found the antipsychotic drug also causes gynecomastia in middle-age men. “A study of U.S. men ages 40 to 85 showed that men who took Ripserdal had a 69 percent higher risk of developing gynecomastia when compared to men who did not take atypical antipsychotic medication, Also, men who were prescribed Risperdal had a 40 percent increase in the risk of developing gynecomastia compared to men who took the antipsychotic drugs, Seroquel or Zyprexa”. The study, based on a health plan claims database, was first presented in March 2014 at the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry and published in the October 2014 issue of the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology.
