celebrex-lawsuit-side-effects-heart-attack-stroke-2Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Celebrex, ibuprofen and naproxen, may increase the risk of chronic kidney disease among people who have high blood pressure and take the pain relievers on a regular basis, a study has found.

Taiwanese researchers used data from the National Health Insurance claims in Taiwan to conduct the study that included 31,900 people with hypertension. Researchers found that people with high blood pressure who took prescription NSAIDs for at least three months were at a 32 percent higher risk of developing chronic kidney disease than people who did not take NSAIDS. The study also found that people who took NSAIDs for less than three months were at an 18 percent increased risk of developing chronic kidney disease.

“According to the researchers, the results provide supporting evidence that NSAID use is linked with an increased risk of chronic kidney damage in people with hypertension,” says Wright & Schulte LLC.

NSAIDs are popular painkillers used to treat everything from headaches to arthritis. NSAIDs reduce the production of chemicals called “prostaglandins” which cause inflammation, fever and pain. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), NSAIDs may also increase the potential of a heart attack and stroke. People with cardiovascular disease, particularly those who recently had a heart attack or cardiac bypass surgery, are at the greatest risk for cardiovascular adverse events associated with NSAIDs.

Pfizer Inc.’s Celebrex is used to manage acute pain, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Celebrex is in a class of drugs known as Cox-2 inhibitor and has cardiovascular and gastrointestinal side effects that include stroke, ulceration, perforation of the stomach or intestines, bleeding and cardiovascular thrombotic events.

In August, FDA strengthened its warnings regarding NSAIDs by requiring manufacturers to update the labels of their prescription NSAIDs and requesting updates on the drug fact labels on over-the-counter non-aspirin NSAIDS regarding the heart attack and stroke risk. A study that influenced the FDA to issue the warning was published in the May 2013 issue of The Lancet. The study found people who took high doses of certain NSAIDs had a 33 percent higher risk of experiencing a stroke, heart attack or early death. Additionally, taking Celebrex, Cambia and Voltaren significantly increased vascular death.

Court documents indicate that a multidistrict litigation was established for all federally filed lawsuits against Pfizer over Celebrex and Bextra, another drug made by the company. In 2008, Pfizer reached an $894 million settlement over the claims that contended the company knew Celebrex was associated with cardiovascular risks but failed to warn the public about the risks and improperly marketed the drug. Pfizer also reached a $164 million settlement with its shareholders who contended that Pfizer misrepresented the clinical trial results for Celebrex to make it appear that Celebrex was safer than other similar drugs.
