The press release reports that the agency sent USPlabs a letter on Nov. 6, 2013 indicating a link between cases of liver illness in Hawaii and the OxyElite Pro products. The letter also started that the agency had received reports of cases of liver disease in other states. According to the press release, the FDA reviewed 46 medical cases submitted by the Hawaii Department of Health, of which 27 patients had taken OxyElite Pro before getting ill. In 17 of those cases, OxyElite Pro was the only dietary supplement being taken.
An update by the FDA reports that as of October 31, 2013, 56 cases of acute non-viral hepatitis are being investigated and that of those cases, 22 people have been hospitalized, two have had liver transplants, and one person has died. The updates says that a warning letter had been sent to USP Labs LLC on October 11, 2013 stating that OxyElite Pro and another dietary supplement, VERSA-1 were deemed adulterated because of an ingredient contained in both that had not previously been present in the food supply, “and had no history of use or other evidence of safety when used as suggested in the labeling.” (http://www.fda.gov/ForConsumers/ConsumerUpdates/ucm374742.htm)
OxyElite Has History of Health Dangers
According to the FDA, the agency issued an administrative detention order earlier this year, requiring that a different formulation of OxyElite Pro be destroyed because the products contained the stimulant DMAA, or dimethylamylamine, which can cause high blood pressure and lead to seizures, heart attacks, psychiatric disorders, and death. The company then substituted aegeline, an alkaloid extract from Asian bael tree leaves.
