NuvaRing Side Effect Lawsuits and Complaints Continue to Grow

More than 5,000 complaints and 1,000 lawsuits filed against NuvaRing over serious injuries including blood clots and heart attack

Heavily marketed as a safe alternative to the pill, users and researchers alike have found that using NuvaRing can have serious if not deadly consequences. Thousands of women have filed NuvaRing lawsuits and complaints alleging they have suffered pulmonary embolisms, strokes, heart attack, and deep vein thrombosis due to blood clots and other serious side effects because of NuvaRing. In fact, more than 5,000 NuvaRing complaints have been filed with the FDA due to these serious side effects.

NuvaRing Lawsuits Over A Thousand

At least 1076 NuvaRing lawsuits have been filed in federal court against NuvaRing maker Merck & Co, and subsidiary Organon, by women and the families of those who have suffered serious and sometimes fatal injuries allegedly because of NuvaRing side effects. Even more NuvaRing lawsuits have been filed in state courts across the country. One woman filed a NuvaRing lawsuit after she developed a pulmonary embolism just a few months after she started using NuvaRing. Many of the lawsuits are accusing Merck of failing to warn about the serious risks the birth control carries, while others claim that Merck falsely marketed NuvaRing as a safe alternative to taking oral birth control.

NuvaRing Side Effects May Be Deadly

NuvaRing was approved in 2001 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and has been used by millions of women in 30 countries as a once a month, low dose contraceptive that combines releases the hormones ethinyl estradiol and etonogestrel continuously in the body. Unfortunately, studies have shown the chemicals in NuvaRing may increase the risk of blood clots.

The NuvaRing side effects listed by manufacturer Merck include weight gain, sinusitis, nausea, vaginal discharge, headaches, vaginitis, and upper respiratory infection.

However, studies have shown that NuvaRing side effects use may carry far more severe risks, including –

  • Stroke
  • Heart attack
  • Pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lungs)
  • Deep vein thrombosis (blood clots the occur in veins deep in the body, usually in legs or thigh)
  • Cerebral thrombosis
  • Cerebral hemorrhage
  • Toxic shock syndrome
  • Death

Users have a 90 percent higher risk of NuvaRing blood clots

Last year, the British Medical Journal published a study that found that, “Women who use transdermal patches or vaginal rings for contraception have a 7.9 and 6.5 times increased risk of confirmed venous thrombosis compared with non-users of hormonal contraception.” The authors of the study further noted, “the vaginal ring conferred a 90% higher risk of venous thrombosis than did combined oral contraceptives containing levonorgestrel”

No NuvaRing Recall

Merck has not issued a recall for NuvaRing and it is still being sold in the U.S. as a safe and effective alternative to the pill. Even though more than 5,000 NuvaRing complaints have been filed with the FDA, the FDA has not issued a NuvaRing recall.
