NSAID Lawsuits Allege Aleve, Advil, Celebrex And Other Pain Relievers Cause Consumers To Suffer Heart Attacks Or Strokes.

Studies have shown that ibuprofen, naproxen and other pain-relieving drugs may increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and chronic kidney damage in people with hypertension. Now a new study suggests that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are linked to an increased risk of heart failure. NSAIDs have been the subject of lawsuits filed on behalf of individuals who suffered heart attacks and strokes allegedly after taking the drugs.

The study, published in the British Medical Journal in September, identified 92,163 adults admitted to hospitals for heart failure and a control group of 8.2 million adults who had not been hospitalized for heart failure. Researchers reviewed healthcare databases from the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom from 2000 to 2010. Adults who used NSAIDs in the previous 14 days had a 19 percent higher risk for hospital admission for heart failure compared to the control group. Additionally, risk of admission for heart failure increased for seven traditional NSAIDs: diclofenac, ibuprofen, indomethacin, ketorolac, naproxen, nimesulide, and piroxicam) and two COX 2 inhibitors (etoricoxib and rofecoxib). The heart failure hospitalization risk also depended on the NSAID used and the dosage.

“While NSAIDs are taken to relieve pain, studies are showing that the drugs are placing consumers at greater risks for more serious complications,” says Wright & Schulte LLC.

The Firm is currently evaluating Celebrex (celecoxib) and NSAID side-effects lawsuits. If you have suffered a heart attack, stroke, kidney damage or heart failure due to taking NSAIDs, such as Advil, Celebrex, Motrin or Aleve, please contact Wright & Schulte LLC for a free lawsuit case evaluation by completing the form on the right side of the page or call us at 1-800-399-0795.

NSAIDs, available by prescription or over-the-counter, treat pain, fever, headaches, colds, and other health conditions. Among the most familiar NSAIDs are ibuprophen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), and celecoxib (Celebrex). In July 2015, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned that NSAIDs increased the chance of a heart attack or stroke. The warning came after the FDA reviewed a study that found individuals who took high doses of certain NSAIDs had a 33 percent higher risk of suffering a stroke, heart attack or early death.

The most recent NSAIDs study showing serious side effects after using the medications is similar to one published in the September 2015 issue of Hypertension that found people with high blood pressure who took NSAIDS for at least three months were at a 32 percent higher risk for developing chronic kidney disease.

Court documents indicate that NSAID manufacturers have been accused failing to warn the public about the cardiovascular risks associated with their drugs. Pfizer, for instance, reached a $486 million settlement in August with its shareholders who claimed the company hid safety risks associated with Celebrex and Bextra, according to a Reuters report. (Re: Case number 1:04-cv-09866, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York) Similarly, Merck reached an $830 million settlement in January of a federal class-action lawsuit filed by its shareholders over Vioxx, according to Bloomberg. Merck took Vioxx off the market in 2004 after a study showed Vioxx doubled the risk of heart attack and stroke.
