Nexium Side-Effects Lawsuits Allege PPI Drugs That Treat Heartburn And Acid Reflux Can Cause Kidney Disease And Other Health Complications.
Men and women who have filed Nexium side-effets lawsuits contend the heartburn drug has the potential to cause kidney failure, renal failure and chronic kidney disease. Now, a recently published study found users of Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid and other Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) drugs may not show warning signs of acute kidney injury prior to developing chronic kidney disease.
The study, published in the Kidney International medical journal, involved the St. Louis Department of Veteran’s Affairs’ database of 125,596 new users of PPIs and 18,436 new users of Histamine receptor antagonists (H2 blockers), which are another class of heartburn medications that include Pepcid and Zantac. Researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis discovered that after five years of follow-up, over 80 percent of PPI users did not develop acute kidney injury, a warning sign for the onset of chronic kidney damage. Conversely, only 7.67 percent of H2 blocker users developed chronic kidney disease without developing acute kidney problems and 1.27 percent developed end-stage renal disease. The study’s senior author, Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly advised doctors to “pay careful attention to kidney function in their patients who use PPIs, even when there are no signs of problems.”
In addition to reviewing new studies, the attorneys at Wright & Schulte LLC have been speaking with men and women and their survivors from around the country who believe they developed chronic kidney damage, kidney failure, or even death due to taking Nexium and other PPI drugs.
“This is yet another study that supports allegations found in Nexium lawsuits that plaintiffs who use Nexium to treat heartburn developed kidney problems,” says Wright & Schulte LLC. Findings of the latest study are similar to one published in JAMA Internal Medicine in January 2016. Researchers concluded that people who treat heartburn with PPI medications have a 20 percent to 50 percent higher risk of developing chronic kidney disease compared to people who do not take the drugs.
Nexium, a popular heartburn drug known as “the purple pill,” is manufactured by AstraZeneca. Nexium is in a class of drugs called Proton Pump Inhibitors that treat gastrointestinal problems by reducing the amount of acid in the stomach. PPI drugs also are used to treat stomach ulcers, duodenal ulcers, and other digestive disorders.

Nearly 40 Nexium lawsuits are pending in federal courts nationwide against manufacturers and marketers of Nexium and other PPI drugs. Nexium lawsuits assert PPI drugs have side effects that include chronic kidney damage, kidney failure, infection, low vitamin B12 levels, low magnesium levels, severe diarrhea, bone fractures, and renal failure. In January, some plaintiffs involved in Nexium cases petitioned the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation to consolidate all federally filed Nexium and PPI lawsuits. The federal judicial panel, however, denied the request to centralize the lawsuits for coordinated pretrial proceedings. Despite the denial for consolidation, Nexium lawsuits will continue against AstraZeneca, Takeda Pharmaceuticals U.S.A., Inc., which markets Prevacid and Dexilant, Procter & Gamble, which makes Prilosec OTC, and Pfizer, which sells over-the-counter PPI formulations.
