Nexium Lawsuits Allege The Heartburn Drug Causes Serious Kidney Injuries And Bone Fracturescauses and Other Adverse Side Effects

Nexium-Lawsuit-Kidney-Damage-Lawsuits-AttorneyAs Nexium Lawsuits are pending litigation, a new study on Nexium side-effects reports long-term use of Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI) poses risks to patients with heart disease. The study suggests that patients with heart disease are at risk of weight loss, anemia, and a worsening metabolic profile when taking Nexium. The research published September 15 in the International Journal of Cardiology, comes at the same time Nexium lawsuits are being filed alleging the popular heartburn medication causes chronic kidney damage, kidney disease, bone fractures and other adverse side effects.

The Nexium side-effects study involved 604 patients scheduled for cardiovascular rehabilitation two to six months after having their heart treatment. Of the total number of patients, 294 were taking PPIs, like Nexium, Prevacid, and Prilosec as part of their therapy. Researchers found patients taking PPIs were six times more likely to experience anemia compared to patients who did not take PPIs. Additionally, PPI use was also associated with worsening of metabolic profile, in part due to decreased use of ACE-inhibitors and statins, according to the study. Researchers concluded that a “high proportion of cardiovascular, particularly surgical patients with ischemic and valvular heart disease, utilized proton pump inhibitor in prolonged courses. Prolonged courses of PPIs were connected with existence and worsening of red blood count indexes, older age, lesser weight of patients and underutilization of cardioprotective drugs.”

“The findings of this Nexium study add more potential health conditions patients who use PPI drugs, such as Nexium, may experience.” – Wright & Schulte LLC.

Nexium (esomeprazole magnesium), widely known as the “purple pill” because of its bright purple color, was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2001. Nexium, made by the U.K-based AstraZeneca, and other PPIs, including Prilosec, Zegerid and Prevacid, help reduce the amount of acid in the stomach. In May 2010, the FDA warned of possible increased risk of hip, wrist and spine fractures associated with the use of PPIs. Four years later, the federal agency required a change in the safety label of PPIs to include acute interstitial nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys) as a side effect. Court documents indicate that federally filed lawsuits against AstraZenca over Nexium are consolidated for coordinated pretrial proceedings in the U.S. District Court, Central District of California. The lawsuits allege that AstraZeneca failed to adequately warn patients about Nexium’s harmful side effects, including bone fractures, chronic kidney damage, and kidney failure. The complaints also contend AstraZeneca neglected to use “ordinary care” when manufacturing and selling Nexium and made unsubstantiated claims about Nexium’s superiority to competing heartburn drugs. In addition to allegations in Nexium lawsuit filings, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) accused AstraZeneca of engaging in a kickback scheme to increase sales of Nexium. The company agreed to pay $7.9 million to resolve the allegations of violating the False Claims Act brought by the DOJ. [justice.gov/opa/pr/astrazeneca-pay-79-million-resolve-kickback-allegations]
