Nexium Lawsuit Filings Allege Nexium And Other Drugs That Treat Heartburn And Acid Reflux Can Cause Life-Threatening Kidney Problems.

Nexium-Lawsuit-Kidney-Damage-Lawsuits-LawyerFilings of Nexium lawsuits continue with a newly filed complaint that alleges a man who used Nexium and Prevacid to treat peptic disorders developed an acute kidney injury. This lawsuit claims an Idaho man’s kidney injury required hospitalization. The Nexium lawsuit further states the heartburn drugs also caused severe and permanent personal injuries, pain, suffering, and emotional distress. AstraZeneca, which manufactures Nexium, and Takeda Pharmaceuticals, which developed Prevacid, are defending themselves against Nexium lawsuits that allege their heartburn drugs cause chronic kidney disease, kidney damage, kidney failure, renal failure, acute kidney injury and other life-threatening side effects.

The attorneys at Wright & Schulte LLC are investigating complaints from men and women nationwide who say they have suffered injuries from Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid, Zegerid, and other Proton Pump Inhibitor medications that treat heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and high levels of stomach acid.

“People take these medications hoping to relieve heartburn or stomach problems but unfortunately, develop kidney problems and other serious medical conditions,” says attorney Richard Schulte, co-founder of Wright & Schulte LLC.

The Nexium lawsuit in Idaho states the plaintiff took Nexium and Prevacid from October 2006 to April 2016 to treat peptic disorders that include GERD, peptic ulcer disease, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug-induced gastropathy. The lawsuit accuses AstraZeneca and Takeda Pharmaceuticals of misrepresenting to the healthcare community, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the general public and the plaintiff that “Nexium and Prevacid had been tested and was found to be safe and/or effective for its indicated use.” The complaint further accuses the defendants of concealing their knowledge of Nexium and Prevacid’s defects. (Case No. 3:17-cv-00174, U.S. District Court, District of Idaho)

Nexium (esomeprazole magnesium) is a heartburn drug known as “the purple pill” because of its bright purple color. Nexium received FDA-approval in 2001. Prevacid (lansoprazole), approved by the FDA in 1995, is used to treat heartburn, prevent stomach and intestinal ulcers and symptoms associated with GERD. Nexium and Prevacid are in a class of drugs called Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI). PPIs are available by prescription and over the counter to treat stomach ulcers, duodenal ulcers, heartburn, acid reflux disease, and other digestive disorders. Other popular PPI drugs include Dexilant, Prilosec OTC, and Zegerid. Nexium lawsuits maintain PPI drugs have side effects that include chronic kidney damage, kidney failure, infection, low vitamin B12 levels, low magnesium levels, severe diarrhea, bone fractures, and renal failure.

With the growing number of Nexium lawsuit filings involving other PPI drugs, a group of plaintiffs involved in the litigation asked a federal judicial panel to consolidate all cases in a single federal court for coordinated pretrial proceedings. The lawsuits had common allegations of plaintiffs developing kidney failure, kidney damage, chronic kidney disease, renal failure and other problems after taking the PPI drugs, including Nexium and Prevacid. The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation, however, denied the request. As a result, Nexium and PPI lawsuits will proceed as individual complaints in the federal district courts in which the cases were filed.
