This has come to the attention of the attorneys at the law firm of Wright & Schulte LLC who are representing clients in Abilify gambling lawsuits. The firm has spoken with numerous with men and women from across the country who are believed to have developed a gambling addiction after taking Abilify. The antipsychotic drug users are filing Ability lawsuits against Otsuka Pharmaceuticals and Bristol-Myers Squibb, which makes and markets the drug, for failing to warn about the risk of developing side effects of gambling addictions and other compulsive behaviors.

Antipsychotic drugs, such as Abilify, often do not provide enough benefit to justify their toxic side effects, according to a new analysis of key scientific studies published in the medical journal, Drug Safety. Abilify, Gedeon, Haldol, Risperdal, Seroquel and Zyprexa, the most widely used antipsychotic drugs, were included in the analysis since they accounted for nearly 54 million prescriptions in 2015, according to the study written by two researchers from Institute For Safe Medication Practices (ISMP), which published key findings in its January QuarterWatch report. The study called for “regulators and the medical community to conduct an independent scientific and clinical reassessment of the appropriate use of antipsychotic drugs.” [ismp.org/QuarterWatch/pdfs/2016Q2.pdf]

“The study’s findings are not surprising given the devastation suffered by the men and women we speak to who have been seriously harmed by antipsychotic drugs such as Abilify,” says Wright & Schulte LLC.

Abilify (aripiprazole) is an atypical antipsychotic drug approved in November 2002 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, Tourette’s disorder, and irritability associated with autistic disorder. Abilify is also used with antidepressants to treat depression. Aripiprazole is included in a class of drugs called partial dopamine receptor agonists and works somewhat differently than other drugs in its class, according to the FDA. Most atypical antipsychotics more fully block dopamine receptors in the brain, while aripiprazole only partially blocks the activity of these receptors. Since Abilify was approved in 2002, the FDA has received 184 reports of Abilify users displaying compulsive behaviors that include gambling, eating, spending, shopping and sex.

Court documents indicate that all pending Abilify lawsuits filed in federal courts nationwide were consolidated in October in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Florida. The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) centralized current and future Abilify gambling complaints in the Florida federal court for coordinated pretrial proceedings. The JPML found that all of the Abilify lawsuit claims contend that Otsuka Pharmaceuticals and Bristol-Myers Squibb, which makes and markets Abilify, did not adequately warn doctors and their patients that the medication causes impulse control disorders that include binge eating, shopping and having sex.
