Da Vinci Robotic Surgery Injuries
The Da Vinci Robot is a large, remote controlled robot used to provide a greater range of movement for surgeons performing laparoscopic surgery. Using joystick-like controls, the surgeon manipulates four arms, one equipped with a camera, that are inserted into the patient via tiny incisions. According to Intuitive Surgical, more than 2,462 Da Vinci Surgical Systems are operating in over 1,936 hospitals globally. More than 200,000 Da Vinci procedures are performed each year, including:
- Robotic hysterectomy surgery
- Robotic prostate removal surgery
- Robotic Gastric bypass surgery
- Robotic Gall bladder removal surgery
- Robotic Thyroid cancer surgery
Da Vinci Surgical Robotic surgery injuries often require additional surgeries to repair the damage and can result in lifelong pain and suffering. In some cases, injuries are not apparent immediately, and may not be diagnosed for days or even weeks after the initial Da Vinci procedure.
Da Vinci Surgical Robotic Lawsuit or Robotic Surgery Lawsuit Allegations
Intuitive Surgical claims that Da Vinci procedures offer shorter recovery times and fewer complications than traditional surgery. But lawsuits allege no large-scale randomize studies have ever been conducted to prove these claims. One study, published in 2009 by researchers at Harvard Medical School, found that prostate cancer patients who underwent minimally-invasive prostate removal, most of which involve a robotic procedure, were more than twice as likely to experience incontinence or impotence a year and a half after their operations compared to patients who had traditional surgery with an open incision. Success at controlling the cancer was about the same for both operations.
Da Vinci Surgery Robot lawsuits allege Intuitive Surgical failed to warn doctors about design flaws in the device, including un-insulated surgical arms and use of an electrical current that can cause serious bodily injury. Others claim that surgeons are not receiving enough training to become proficient with the device. Allegedly, Intuitive offers just two days of formal training when a hospital purchases a Da Vinci Robot. At least one study, published in Reviews in Neurology, found that doctors needed to perform 200 robot-aided prostate surgeries to gain competence with the machine.
