Liquid-Laundry-Pod-Poisoning-Lawsuits-Wright-and-SchutleLaundry Pod Lawsuits: Despite changes in safety labels of liquid laundry detergent pods, reports show poisonings and other accidents involving the products occur at a rate of about 30 per day. A review of data from U.S. poison centers shows the majority of poisonings involve children under 6. However, older adults with dementia have also been injured by laundry pods. Medical experts are not sure why the laundry pods are more harmful than traditional laundry detergent. Poison control experts suspect the highly concentrated formula and the way the liquid shoots out when the packets burst may be among the reasons. There are currently more than a dozen laundry pod lawsuits pending litigation after young children and the elderly have been serious injured or died from laundry pod poisoning. At least four people have died after biting into the laundry pods, including a 7-month-old boy in Florida and a 16-month-old toddler in New Jersey, the Wall Street Journal reported. Children often mistake the small, colorful products as candy or toys. So far in 2016, 6,843 children five and younger have been exposed to single-load laundry packets from January 1 to July 31, according to the American Association of Poison Control Centers. “While laundry detergent pods are popular with consumers, it’s unfortunate that these products continue to cause serious injuries,” says Richard Schulte, co-founder of Wright & Schulte LLC, a nationwide firm who filed the first laundry pod lawsuits against Procter & Gamble, maker of Tide Pods.

The firm continues to offer no-obligation legal consultations to families whose children or senior adults have be harmed by laundry detergent products such as Procter & Gamble’s Tide Pods and Gain Flings Laundry Detergent Pods, and Sun Products Corporation’s All Mighty Pacs. Liquid laundry detergent pods remain popular based on sales increasing almost 30 percent to $873.5 million, from 2014 to March 2015, according to the IRI market research firm. While sales have been growing, so have calls for making the products safer. The Detergent Poisoning And Child Safety Act of 2015 was introduced in the U.S. House and Senate to require manufacturers to add more safety warnings, change the pod’s candy-like appearance, and change the highly concentrated formula.

Last year, detergent manufacturers agreed to voluntary implement new safety standards for their products. Procter & Gamble, for instance, changed its Tide Pods packages so the brightly colored pods cannot be seen, and added Child-Guard zippers to make it harder for children to open.
