Dupont-C8-Lawsuit-Class-Action-LawsuitsThousands of people living in Southern Ohio and West Virginia were exposed to C8 (perfluorooctanoate, or PFOA), a dangerous toxic chemical that has been linked to numerous health woes. For decades, DuPont’s Washington Works plant, located in Parkersburg, West Virginia, discharged large amounts of this chemical into the air, while at the same time, DuPont disposed of C8 in landfills along the Ohio River. By the 1980s, DuPont was actually aware that water in the area was contaminated with the toxin, yet residents were not informed of the danger until decades later. Today, it is known that four water districts in Ohio, along with two in West Virginia, were contaminated with this dangerous chemical. As a result of their DuPont C8 exposure, untold numbers of people were unknowingly put at risk for serious health problems, including:

  • Kidney cancer
  • Testicular cancer
  • Thyroid disease
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis)
  • Preeclampsia (high blood pressure during pregnancy)
  • High cholesterol

Dupont C8 Toxic Exposure

C8 is a chemical used in the manufacture of Teflon. In 2002, DuPont finally disclosed that groundwater within proximity of the Washington Works plant had been contaminated with this potentially-carcinogenic substance. In 2005, DuPont settled a class action lawsuit filed on behalf of more 70,000 people living in the six affected water districts in Ohio and West Virginia, which required the company to establish the C8 Science Panel to explore “probable links” between C8 exposure and diseases. In the event of such a finding, anyone who was exposed to C8-tainted drinking water for at least a year and developed a “probable link” disease would also have the right to file a DuPont C8 exposure lawsuit seeking compensation for their injuries.

In October 2012, the C8 Science Panel concluded that there is a probable link between the chemical and a number of disorders, including testicular and kidney cancers, pregnancy-induced hypertension (pre-eclampsia), thyroid disease, high cholesterol and inflammatory bowel disease. Since then, numerous individuals exposed to C8 from the DuPont plant in Parkersburg, West Virginia, have filed suit against DuPont seeking compensation for their pain and suffering. On April 8, 2013, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) ordered that all federal DuPont C8 lawsuits be transferred United States District Court, Southern District of Ohio for pretrial proceedings.

Communities Affected by DuPont C8 Exposure

The six Ohio and West Virginia water districts covered by the 2005 DuPont C8 class action lawsuit settlement include :

  • Little Hocking, Ohio
  • City of Belpre, Ohio

  • Lubeck Public Service District, West Virginia
