Xarelto (rivaroxaban) is a new anticoagulant blood thinner that was approved by the FDA in 2011. Xarelto is manufactured by Bayer and marketed by Johnson & Johnson’s subsidiary, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, in the United States. The most dangerous and severe side-effect associated with Xarelto, approved to prevent strokes and blot clots, is uncontrolled bleeding, which can lead to death – a risk shared by all blood thinners. Major bleeding occurs because the prescription blood thinner reduces clotting in those who take the oral medication.

What is Xarelto?

Xarelto, which has a generic name of rivaroxaban, is manufactured by Bayer and marketed by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. Xarelto was initially approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in July 2011 to reduce deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in patients who had knee or hip replacement surgery. In November 2011, the federal agency approved the anticoagulant for reducing stroke and blood clot risks in patients with atrial fibrillation (irregular heart rhythms). The FDA expanded its approval of Xarelto in November 2013 to treat deep vein thrombosis. According to the FDA, the concern over rivaroxaban is that it has no specific antidote available to effectively treating severe bleeding linked to the medication.

FDA Black Box Xarelto Warnings

The FDA issued two black box warnings on Xarelto because of the bleeding risks associated with the drug. The federal agency warns that people with atrial fibrillation, not caused by a heart valve problem, who discontinue Xarelto without replacing it with another blood thinner are at an increased risk of dangerous blood clots. The second FDA warning claims a spinal anesthesia, such as an epidural or a spinal tap, performed on patients who take Xarelto may result in bleeding (hematomas) around the spine that can lead to long-term or permanent paralysis.

Xarelto Bleeding Side-Effects That Are Causing Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) Lawsuits

The most common adverse reaction associated with Xarelto is bleeding, according to the FDA. Xarelto may cause those who take the blood thinner to bleed more easily and the bleeding may take longer than usual to stop. Xarelto internal bleeding can be serious and fatal. Other signs or symptoms of bleeding that have been reported by those taking Xarelto medication include:

  • Unusual bleeding from the gums, nose or mouth
  • Bright red or black stools (looks like tar)
  • Red, pink or brown urine
  • Heavier than normal menstrual bleeding
  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Vomiting blood or vomit that looks like “coffee grounds”
  • Coughing up blood or blood clots
  • Prolonged bleeding around a cut or wound

Non-bleeding symptoms also occur, such as:

  • Easy bruising
  • Numbness, tingling or muscle weakness or pain
  • Feeling faint or weak, as if you might pass out
  • Headaches
  • Itching
  • Back pain

Patients have a higher risk of bleeding when they take Xarelto along with other drugs that increase the risk of bleeding. Patients also risk blood clots around the brain or spinal cord when they use Xarelto along with such drugs as:

  • Aspirin or products containing aspirin
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), and acetaminophen (Tylenol), Warfarin sodium (Coumadin, Jantoven)
  • Clopidogrel, a blood thinner that goes by the brand name “Plavix,” and used to prevent heart attack, stroke and other heart problems

Xarelto Hemorrhaging Side-Effects

Hemorrhaging is another adverse side-effect associated with Xarelto. For instance, an overdose of Xarelto may lead to hemorrhage. Additionally, pregnant women are strongly cautioned on using Xarelto as they run a risk of obstetric hemorrhaging. Clinical studies and reports to the FDA have shown that other Xarelto major bleeding complications include:

  • Pulmonary hemorrhage
  • Cerebral (Brain) hemorrhage
  • Gastrointestinal hemorrhage
  • Subdural hemorrhage
  • Epidural hemorrhage
