Testim lawsuits due to side effects

Testim is a prescription medication approved by the FDA in October 2002 to treat men who have no or low testosterone as a result of an underlying medical condition. Low testosterone is also known as hypogonadism or Low T. The topical testosterone gel is applied to the shoulders and/or upper arms.

According to the website for Testim, topical testosterone products have different strengths and doses and different ways to apply the therapy that may lead to having different levels of testosterone in the body. The website warns that side effects of Testim include; headache, increased blood pressure, Increased red blood cell count, skin irritation where Testim is applied, more erections than normal, and erections that last a long time. There is nothing listed on their site regarding the risk of cardiac events.

Plaintiffs in several Testim lawsuits contend that they experienced strokes and heart attacks after taking the testosterone drug. The lawsuits further contend that advertising campaigns for the medication “sought to create the image and belief” that Testim was a safe way to alleviate their symptoms, had few side effects, and would not interfere with their daily lives the potentially fatal side effects were not mentioned in the marketing campaign.

FDA Warming on Testosterone Treatment Medication

In May 2009, the FDA required Auxilium Pharmaceuticals Inc., to include a box warning on Testim’s label to include the possibility of virilization in children and women who after secondary exposure to the testosterone gel.

By January 2014, the FDA announced its investigation into the risk of heart attack, stroke and death in men who used testosterone products, such as Testim and AndroGel. The FDA stated in its safety alert that it decided to reassess testosterone replacement therapy products based on two studies regarding the prescribed drugs. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in November 2013 suggested that older men with underlying cardiovascular disease who used the prescribed testosterone treatment had a 30 percent increased risk of stroke, heart attack or death in contrast to men who were not taking the medication. The FDA cited a second study in which older men and younger men with a history of heart disease who used testosterone replacement therapy had an increased risk of heart attack. According to the study, men 65 and older had twice the risk of having a heart attack in the first 90 days of using the first prescription.

Since the FDA’s released its safety alert, lawsuits have been filed on behalf of men who contended that they suffered serious cardiac issues due to testosterone treatment drugs, such as AndroDerm. Plaintiffs in the testosterone treatment therapy lawsuits allege that they experienced such side effects as:

  • Heart attacks
  • Heart failure
  • Strokes
  • Pulmonary embolisms
  • Deep vein thrombosis

The lawsuits further contended that the advertisements for the testosterone replacement therapy led men to believe that they needed to use these products, although they did not have low testosterone.
