Risperdal and Gynecomastia or male breast growth

Risperdal was originally approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to treat adults with schizophrenia. But it was widely used off-label in children to treat bi-polar disorders, autism, irritability, aggression, and behavior disorders. Since at least 1999, research has pointed to a link between Risperdal and male breast growth. That year, as study was published that found that the condition could occur in patients treated with Risperdal in conjunction with Prozac. In 2006, researchers from Duke University reported that the risk of Risperdal gynecomastia was stronger compared to other atypical antipsychotics.

It is believed that Risperdal may increase the levels of a hormone called prolactin. Among other things, prolactin is known to stimulate breast development in girls, as well as lactation in nursing mothers. In men, prolactin is known to cause gynecomastia.

Plaintiffs in Risperdal lawsuits claim that Johnson & Johnson actively concealed evidence that the drug could cause male breast growth in order to protect its profits from the medication. The company has reportedly reached Risperdal settlements in a number of such claims. However, the terms of the agreements have not been disclosed.

Symptoms of Risperdal Gynecomastia

Boys who develop gynecomastia from Risperdal may experience:

  • Breast pain
  • Breast tenderness
  • Swelling in the breast
  • Nipple discharge

Risperdal gynecomastia can affect one or both breasts. Often liposuction may be needed to reduce the size of the breasts in boys who develop the condition. In the most severe cases of Risperdal gynecomastia, a mastectomy (breast removal surgery) may be needed.

Risperdal Lawsuit: Illegal Marketing Allegations

Johnson & Johnson has faced allegations that it illegally marketed Risperdal as a treatment for children with autism and other psychiatric disorders. In August 2012, the company reached an agreement with 36 state attorneys general to settle Risperdal illegal marketing lawsuits for $181 million. These lawsuits also accused Johnson & Johnson of concealing the drug’s side effects, including Risperdal gynecomastia. In July 2012, it was reported that the company was in discussion to pay more than $2 billion to settle similar Risperdal illegal marketing charges brought by the U.S. Department of Justice.
