A number of Pradaxa lawsuits filed against Boehringer Ingelheim, the maker of Pradaxa, have alleged that the use of this anticoagulant drug can cause severe, potentially life-threatening bleeding / hemorrhages and other serious injuries. Although Pradaxa was initially approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2010 and has been marketed as an effective alternative to the anticoagulant drug warfarin, about one year later in November 2011, Boehringer Ingelheim admitted that it had received 260 reports of fatal Pradaxa bleeding (from 2008 through October 2011). However, 2011 alone, the FDA has stated that it received 542 reports of Pradaxa deaths, which is more than double the number reported by Boehringer Ingelhiem.
The most severe Pradaxa Side Effects Complications or adverse reactions patients have reported after taking Pradaxa include:
- Serious internal bleeding / hemorrhage
- Intercranial brain bleeding / hemorrhage
- Stomach and intestinal bleeding / hemorrhage
- Kidneys and other organs bleeding / hemorrhage
- Irreversible life threatening bleeding / hemorrhage events
- Heart attack
- Severe allergic reaction
According to Boehringer Ingelheim and medical professionals, patients with the highest risk of sustaining such Pradaxa Side Effects / Complications include those who are older than 75, have a history of kidney problems and/or recurring gastrointestinal bleeding and are taking certain other medications (such as warfarin, NSAIDs or aspirin-containing medications).

FDA Report on Pradaxa Bleeding Side Effects / Complications Injuries
According to the FDA, approximately 725,000 patients in the U.S. have used Pradaxa. In 2011 alone, sales of Pradaxa exceeded $1 billion. [http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/health/story/2012-08-19/pradaxa-blood-thinner-lawsuit/57134628/1] Despite Pradaxa’s popularity, however, an FDA report released in May 2012 highlighted the fact that alleged Pradaxa side effects / complications accounted for nearly 3,800 reports of serious injuries that patients had reported to either the FDA or Boehringer Ingelheim in 2011. Of these reports, 542 were related to Pradaxa deaths.

What is possibly just as shocking is the fact that, in 2011, complications allegedly associated with Pradaxa accounted for more reports of bleeding (2,367), kidney failure (291) and stroke (644) than any of the 800 other drugs consistently monitored by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (an independent agency monitoring safety issues with medications). In addition, Pradaxa was reportedly associated with at least 15 cases of liver failure.
In contrast, alleged side effects associated with Coumadin (generically known as warfarin), a mainstay in anticoagulation treatment since 1954, were related to just over 1,100 reports of serious adverse effects in patients; of these, 72 reports were associated with warfarin deaths.

In addition to the vast number of reports associated with allegations of Pradaxa bleeding and other Pradaxa side effects / complications, another problem that undermines the alleged efficacy of this anticoagulant is the fact that there is no “antidote” associated with it. Specifically, while doctors can administer vitamin K to warfarin patients who display signs of excessive bleeding, there is no such antidote to stop cases of excessive hemorrhaging allegedly related to Pradaxa; instead, Boehringer Ingelheim has advised medical professionals to perform dialysis on these patients, an option that many doctors insist is unrealistic for patients who are bleeding to death.
