OxyElite Pro Liver Failure Injury Information

OxyElite Pro is a dietary supplement sold as a “super thermogenic fat burner” that purportedly enhances the fat burning and muscle building benefits of working out. OxyElite Pro became the subject of a regulatory investigation in October 2013, after 29 people in Hawaii developed liver failure or non-viral hepatitis. Twenty-four of those individuals reported using OxyElite Pro in the 60 days prior to the onset of their illness, including a 48-year-old woman who died of liver failure. The mother of seven children had taken the supplement to lose the weight she had gained during her last pregnancy.

In addition to the liver failure death, 11 of those who experienced acute liver failure connected with OxyElite Pro required hospitalization. At least two patients required liver transplantation.

Once health officials in Hawaii connected OxyElite Pro to the outbreak of liver injuries, stores in the state agreed to voluntarily remove the product from their shelves. The Hawaii Department of Health also instituted an embargo on the product, temporarily deeming the sale of OxyElite Pro illegal. While USPLabs agreed to end sales and distribution of the supplement, OxyElite Pro may still be available on store shelves in other states.
