Studies Link PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitors) Drugs To Kidney damage, failure
A study published in the April 2016 Journal of the American Society of Nephrology found long-term use of PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitors) drugs, including Nexium, can increase the risk of chronic kidney disease, Kidney damage, failure and End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). Researchers used the Veterans Administration database to find that in five years, 173,321 patients who were prescribed PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitors)s were diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, compared to 11 percent of the 20,270 patients who were prescribed H2-blocker drugs, such as Zantac, Pepcid and Tagamet. Although less than 0.2 percent developed end stage renal disease, PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitors) users were at a 96 percent greater risk of developing ESRD.
This study is similar to research published in JAMA Internal Medicine in January 2016 that found people who treat heartburn with PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitors)s have a 20 percent to 50 percent higher risk of chronic kidney disease compared to people who do not take the drugs.

Nexium Lawsuits Due to side Effect Injuries
Court documents indicate that federal Nexium lawsuit claims over Nexium causing fracture and bone problems were centralized in the U.S. District Court, Central District of California in December 2012. In February 2015, AstraZeneca agreed to settle a class-action Nexium lawsuit in Massachusetts for $20 million. The Nexium lawsuit accused the company of deceptively marketing Nexium as superior to competing heartburn drugs, Prilosec, and its generic version, omeprazole, as a way of getting consumers to purchase the higher-cost Nexium. (Case No. 05-0269 BLS; Suffolk County Superior Court, Massachusetts) In the same month, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that AstraZeneca agreed to pay $7.9 million to resolve allegations of engaging in a kickback scheme involving Nexium which violates the federal False Claims Act.

The FDA and PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitors) Drugs
In May 2011, the FDA ordered changes in the safety labels of PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitors) medications after finding the risk of hip, wrist, and spine fractures increase with long-term use of the drugs. The regulatory agency announced the change after reviewing several epidemiological studies that found individuals at greatest risk for these fractures were either taking high doses of PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitors) drugs, including Nexium, or used them for one year or more.
