Contaminated Steroid Fungal Meningitis Outbreak
Aspergillus, or fungal meningitis, occurs when the protective membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord are infected with a fungus. Fungal meningitis can develop after a fungus spreads through the bloodstream from somewhere else in the body, as a result of the fungus being introduced directly into the central nervous system, or by direct extension from an infected body site next to the central nervous system. Symptoms of aspergillus include:
- Stiffness of the neck
- Difficulty walking
- Discomfort from bright lights
It is important to note that patients with fungal meningitis may only experience one or two of the above symptoms. Anyone who recently received an epidural steroid injection for back pain should contact their doctor immediately if they develop any symptom that could indicate they have contracted fungal meningitis from contaminated steroids.
Aspergillus is a form of meningitis that people with compromised immune systems, such as HIV, are vulnerable to contracting. This form of fungal meningitis can be difficult to treat. While a drug called voriconazole can be used against fungal meningitis, its side effects are severe, and include kidney and liver damage. Because the type of meningitis associated with the outbreak and its treatment is so severe, patients require hospitalization – likely for months – during treatment.
Contaminated Steroid Injection Recall
The fungal meningitis outbreak from contaminated steroids has been tied to epidural steroid injections prepared by New England Compounding Center Inc, or NECC, in Framingham, Massachusetts. In the wake of the outbreak, the pharmacy issued a voluntary recall for the tainted steroids and surrendered its license. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), states that received the tainted steroids include: California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Texas, and West Virginia.
Cases of fungal meningitis from contaminated steroids have been reported in Tennessee, North Carolina, Florida, Virginia, Maryland, and Indiana, the CDC reported. The majority of illnesses – 25 – have occurred in Tennessee, where three people have died. One death has been reported in Virginia and one in Maryland.
It’s not yet clear how many vials of contaminated steroids have been distributed. Health officials are fearful the tainted drugs may have been distributed to all 50 states, and that other products distributed by the pharmacy could be contaminated as well.
