The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has strengthened its safety warning that Celebrex and other prescription and over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke that can lead to death. Celebrex’s safety label already includes a warning that the drug may cause heart attack and stroke. According to a Wall Street Journal report, the FDA said new data resulted in the agency finding that NSAIDs “definitely cause” an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. The FDA is requiring all NSAID manufacturers to update their labels with this information. The side effects can happen as early as the first few weeks and the chances of experiencing a heart attack or stroke might increase the longer NSAIDs, such as Celebrex, Advil, Motrin IB, and Aleve, are taken, according to the FDA. People who have high blood pressure or heart disease, are at the greatest risk for experiencing cardiovascular events associated with Celebrex. While aspirin is a NSAID, the FDA said its revised warning does not apply to aspirin.

Celebrex (Celecoxib) Studies
A study published in The Lancet in August 2013 suggested that celecoxib was associated with a 37 percent increase in major vascular events, such as non-fatal heart attack and stroke or vascular (blood vessel-related) death. There was a smaller risk of major vascular events with lower celecoxib doses in a placebo-controlled trial. In March 2005, the New England Journal of Medicine published the results of a randomized clinical trial that found celecoxib was associated with a cardiovascular risk associated with in a clinical trial for colorectal adenoma prevention.

Celebrex Lawsuit Litigation and multidistrict litigation
Court documents indicate that a multidistrict litigation was established for all federally filed lawsuits involving Celebrex and Bextra, another prescription NSAID. The lawsuits, which were consolidated in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of California in 2005, alleged that Pfizer Inc. and Pharmacia Corp., which manufactured Celebrex and was acquired by Pfizer in 2003, knew that the drugs were associated with cardiovascular risks but failed to warn the public about the risks and improperly marketed the drugs. According to court documents, Pfizer pulled Bextra off the market in 2005 but kept Celebrex on the market. In October 2008, Pfizer agreed to settle state and federal Celebrex and Bextra claims for $894 million. (In Re: Bextra and Celebrex Marketing Sales Practices And Product Liability Litigation – MDL No. 1699) Four years later, Pfizer announced that it had reached a $164 million settlement with its shareholders who filed a class-action lawsuit in 2003 against the company over Celebrex. The shareholders lawsuit purported that Pfizer misrepresented the clinical trial results for Celebrex to make it appear that Celebrex was safer than other similar drugs.
