Da Vinci Robot Instrument Recall
According to Wright & Schulte LLC, this new recall was issued just weeks after Intuitive Surgical was cited by the FDA for failing to inform the agency of a warning it sent to customers in October 2011. According to a May 30th 483 letter the FDA issued to Intuitive following an inspection of its headquarters in California, the 2011 warning involved an issue that caused some robotic surgery patients to suffer da Vinci robot complications. This is also the second time since May that instruments used with the Da Vinci robot were the subject of a safety warning. On May 8th, Intuitive Surgical warned its customers about an issue with its EndoWrist Monopolar Curved Scissors that could cause surgical burns in patients. While not a recall, the scissors have since been redesigned and Intuitive’s customers are receiving replacements.

According to a recent NBC News report, the Da Vinci Surgical System was used in 400,000 operations last year, including hysterectomies, prostate surgeries and heart surgeries. Advocates for robotic surgery claim that such procedures result in minimal bleeding, fewer and smaller scars and faster recovery times. However, in a recent filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Intuitive Surgical disclosed that it had been named in 26 Da Vinci surgical robot lawsuits that allege a variety of serious injuries, including surgical burns, organ and tissue damage, and torn blood vessels. The FDA has also received 200 reports of da Vinci complications, including burns, cuts, infections, and 89 deaths, since 2007, according to the NBC news report. The agency is now looking into those complaints to determine if the robot itself is causing the injuries.[rockcenter.nbcnews.com/_news/2013
