Intuitive Surgical Issues Urgent Medical Device Notification Pointing to Possible Risk of Thermal Injuries Associated with Micro-Cracks in Monopolar Curved Scissors Used with the Da Vinci Surgical System.
The Da Vinci robot lawsuit lawyers at Wright & Schulte LLC are disturbed by a recent report that Intuitive Surgical, the manufacturer of the Da Vinci Surgical System, has issued an Urgent Medical Device Medical Notification regarding a “potential issue” with an instrument used with the da Vinci robot. According to a May 10th report from Bizjournals.com, the issue involves possible “micro-cracks” on instruments called EndoWrist Monopolar Curved Scissors. These cracks, which may not be visible to the user, could cause heat to leak and burn tissue.

According to Wright & Schulte LLC, Intuitive Surgical’s Da Vinci Robotic Surgical System is widely used in hysterectomies, prostate removals, heart surgeries, gallbladder removals and bariatric surgery. Proponents of the robot claim it offers patients less bleeding and scarring, as well as shorter recovery times compared to traditional procedures. However, according to a May 10th Wall Street Journal report, the Da Vinci robot has raised safety questions recently, with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) probing an increase in adverse event reports related to the device.

According to a CNBC report from March 19th, a number of Da Vinci lawsuits are pending in courts throughout the country that allege the monopolar energy used by the machine to cauterize and cut tissue can create excessive heat. If the insulation on the instruments is inadequate, arching of the electric current to other tissue can occur, leading to thermal burns.
