Laundry Pod Lawsuits Assert Children Experience Vomiting, Chemical Burns, Drowsiness And Other Injuries When Exposed To Laundry Detergent Packets.

Liquid-Laundry-Pod-Poisoning-Lawsuits-Wright-and-SchutleLaundry Pod Lawsuits: As thousands of calls come into poison control centers nationwide of young children suffering injuries from laundry detergent pods, Locked4Kids Inc. has created packaging to protect kids and senior adults from accessing and ingesting the detergent products. In addition to prompting packaging changes, laundry detergent pods have prompted lawsuits filed on behalf of young children and older adults who have been injured or died after biting into the colorful pods which are mistaken for candy or toys.

Wright & Schulte LLC, which represents families in lawsuits involving Procter & Gamble’s Tide Pods, monitors the latest news and raises public awareness of the dangers of the laundry detergent product. Biting into or swallowing the pod’s highly concentrated detergent causes excessive vomiting, choking, chemical eye burns, seizures, and breathing injuries that require hospitalization and can lead to death.

“Based on calls that come into poison control centers, laundry detergent pods continue to pose a danger to young children,” says Richard Schulte, co-founder of Wright & Schulte LLC, an experienced law firm fighting to protect the rights of families whose children or elderly relatives have been injured by laundry detergent pods.

The firm represented the families of 13 young children who were accidentally exposed to Tide Pods made by Procter & Gamble. (Laundry Pod Lawsuit Case No. A-1502739, Court of Common Pleas in Hamilton County, Ohio) The firm also handled a case involving a 67-year-old Ohio resident with diminished capacity who died after swallowing Tide Pods. Earlier this month at the Interpack 2017 trade show in Düsseldorf, Germany, Locked4Kids Inc. displayed its certified child-resistant, senior friendly package. The company, based in Delaware and The Netherlands, says the package is easy for adults to open but difficult for children. The patented design consists of a folding carton and a plastic tray that holds the products and locks to the carton. To access the product, the tray is pulled out like a drawer. This only works if the two hooks on the top of the carton are pressed at the same time. According to the company, children will have difficulty opening the cartons because they don’t understand how it works. And if they do, they are not able to handle it physically because their hands are too small, the company said.

Laundry detergent pods are popular with consumers because they are pre-measured to wash a single load of laundry. Although pods are convenient to use, youngsters mistake the brightly colored liquid detergent pods for candy and ingest or inhale its highly concentrated content. The products have also come under fire from parents, consumer safety advocates and politicians.

In response to complaints, an international non-profit global standards-setting organization approved the first safety standard for packaging and labeling of the single-load laundry packets in 2015. Last year, Procter & Gamble rolled out its new Tide Pods packaging that includes Child-Guard zippers to make it harder for children to open.
