According Bloomberg News, the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine released a statement on its website earlier this month expressing concern over an increasing number of reports of patient complications related to robotic surgery in the last two years. The Bloomberg report points out that while the alert does not mention a robotic surgery platform by name, Intuitive Surgical’s Da Vinci Surgical System is the only robot system currently approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for soft tissue surgery.

Wright & Schulte LLC is now offering FREE Da Vinci Robotic Surgery Lawsuit consultations to victims of alleged Da Vinci robotic surgery complications, including those who suffered:

Intuitive Surgical’s Da Vinci Surgical System is widely used in hysterectomies, prostate removals, heart surgeries, gallbladder removals and bariatric surgery. Proponents of the robot claim it offers patients less bleeding and scarring, as well as shorter recovery times compared to traditional procedures. According to Bloomberg, the Massachusetts alert provided three examples of the types of complication reports the Board has received over the past two years involving robotic surgery procedures, including a case where a patient underwent a robotic hysterectomy and ovary removal, and experienced damage to the bowel and left ureter that required multiple corrective treatments. The Board is advising doctors to fully inform patients of the risks associated with robot surgery, including details on the amount of experience a surgeon has in performing a particular robotic procedure. Credentialing doctors “should be based on proven competency and proficiency, rather than completion of a set number of cases,” its statement said.

FDA Launches Probe of Da Vinci Robotic Surgery

This is just the latest controversy to raise questions regarding the risks and benefits associated with the Da Vinci Surgical System, according to Wright & Schulte LLC. In January, the FDA launched a probe of the Da Vinci robot to determine if an increase in adverse events related to such procedures is a reflection of a real and growing problem. Earlier this month, the American College of Gynecologists (ACOG) advised its members that robotic-assisted hysterectomy should not be the first choice for most women in need of the procedure. According to a statement issued by the group on March 14th, while robotic surgery may have advances in certain complex hysterectomies, studies have shown that adding this expensive technology for routine surgical care does not improve patient outcomes.
