The Firm’s investigation was prompted by a recent warning from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) regarding a possible link between Abilify and the side effect of compulsive behaviors, as well as the formation of a multidistrict litigation for federal Abilify lawsuits in the U.S. District Court, Middle District of Florida. (Abilify lawsuit MDL No. 2734)

Abilify lawsuits mounting due to the side effect of compulsive behaviors

Court documents indicate that just over 40 Abilify lawsuits are now pending in the federal multidistrict litigation underway in the U.S. District Court, Middle District of Florida. The proceeding was established in October in order to allow all federal claims involving Abilify and compulsive behaviors to undergo coordinated pretrial proceedings. Bristol-Myers Squibb and Otsuka Pharmaceuticals are accused of failing to warn doctors and patients about the potential for Abilify to cause gambling addiction and other impulse-control disorders.

FDA Warning on Abilify and Side effect of Risk for Compulsive Behavior

A recent FDA review has revealed that 184 cases reports linking aripiprazole / Abilify to the side effect of impulse-control problems have been published during the 13 years since Abilify was approved in November 2002. Gambling addiction was the most common side effect reported in using Abilify (164 cases), but other compulsive behaviors, including compulsive eating, spending or shopping, and sexual behaviors, as a side effect of Abilify were also cited. Most of the patients who experienced these issues had no prior history of compulsive behaviors, and reported that uncontrollable urges began after they initiated treatment with aripiprazole. Within days to weeks of reducing the dose or discontinuing aripiprazole, the urges stopped.

FDA to announce new information to be added to Abilify labels

The Abilify side effect findings prompted the FDA to announce that new information regarding compulsive behaviors would be added to the labels of Abilify and related medications. While pathological gambling had previously been mentioned on the labels, the agency said the description did not entirely reflect the nature of the impulse-control risk identified by its review.

Abilify used to treat certain psychological disorders

Abilify is an antipsychotic used to treat certain psychological disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorders, irritability, aggression, and mood swings. Its active ingredient, aripiprazole, is also found in Abilify Maintena, Aristada, and generics. Aripiprazole is a dopamine receptor agonists, and impacts a neurotransmitter that helps control the brain’s reward and pleasure center.
