Reports to the FDA Have Linked 5-Hour Energy with 13 Deaths, and Dozens of Life-Threatening Injuries, Including Heart Attacks, Seizure, and Even One Miscarriage.

While the manufacturer of 5-Hour Energy does not disclose the amount of caffeine contained in the product, recent investigations have placed that level at about 215 milligrams, according to The New York Times. An average cup of coffee can have between 100 and 150 milligrams of caffeine. In addition to caffeine, 5-Hour Energy and some similar products contain phenylalanine, an amino acid that cannot be adequately broken down by people with a genetic disorder called phenylketonuria. In such individuals, phenylalanine gets converted to a chemical that can cause seizures, and even mental retardation in developing infants and children, according to a recent report posted on Forbes.com.

This is not the first time products like 5-Hour Energy have been associated with reports of injury and deaths. According to the Times, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration reported late last year that more than 13,000 emergency room visits in 2009 were associated with energy drinks.
