The Transvaginal Mesh Lawsuit

The Plaintiff in the New Jersey lawsuit had sought $3.38 million for lost earnings and past and future medical expenses, as well as an unspecified amount for pain and suffering. During the trial, her attorneys presented company documents and e-mails that claimed to show Ethicon knew the mesh would cause pain and harm to women. Following the vaginal mesh lawsuit verdict, one of her lawyers told Bloomberg that the case they presented established that the Prolift device should never have been sold.

FDA Transvaginal Mesh Warning

On October 20, 2008, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Public Heath Notification advising it had received more than 1,000 vaginal mesh complaints over a three year period relating to transvaginal mesh products. In a second Public Health Notification issued on July 13, 2011, the FDA noted that it had received a total of 2,864 additional reports of vaginal mesh complications. The agency concluded that serious injuries associated with surgical mesh for transvaginal repair of pelvic organ prolapse, were “not rare,” and further advised that transvaginal prolapse repair with mesh “does not improve symptomatic results or quality of life over traditional non mesh repair.”

Thousands of Women File Transvaginal Mesh Lawsuits

Since the FDA issued its warnings on transvaginal mesh, thousands of women have filed vaginal mesh lawsuits against the manufacturers of these devices.
