More Than 2,000 Pradaxa Lawsuits Have Been Filed Against Boehringer, Reports Wright & Schulte

Boehringer, the German company that makes the blood thinner Pradaxa, is currently facing more than 2,000 Pradaxa lawsuits based on claims that this medication caused patients to suffer from potentially life-threatening hemorrhaging and other severe injuries.

These cases, which have been consolidated in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Illinois, all generally claim, according to court documents, that Boehringer failed to disclose the risks associated with the use of Pradaxa and failed to alert the public about the lack of an antidote for severe Pradaxa bleeding (In Re: Pradaxa (Danigatran Etexilate) Products Liability Litigation – MDL No. 2385).

News of the growing number of Pradaxa lawsuits comes on the heels of the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) recent announcement that it will be conducting a large-scale evaluation of Pradaxa bleeding rates (versus the bleeding rates associated with the older blood thinner warfarin). According to the FDA, it will “assess systematically the rates of bleeding and thromboembolic outcomes associated with the use of dabigatran [Pradaxa] and warfarin for patients with atrial fibrillation.” Wright & Schulte’s attorneys expect these Pradaxa lawsuit filings to continue to grow in 2014 as FDA’s findings come to light.

Background on Pradaxa Bleeding Lawsuits

Pradaxa is an anti-coagulant medication that was approved by the FDA in October 2010 and was intended to be an effective alternative to the blood thinner warfarin. Despite its promising introduction, however, Pradaxa has reportedly been linked some severe bleeding injuries, including intercranial brain bleeding, stomach and intestinal bleeding and severe hemorrhaging of other organs. Additionally, Pradaxa injuries have reportedly included stroke, heart attack and severe allergic reaction.

While Boehringer has admitted that it has received 260 reports of Pradaxa bleeding injuries (from 2008 through October 2011), the FDA has reported that, in 2011 alone, it received 542 reports of Pradaxa bleeding deaths.
[, December 2011]

In 2012, the number of serious Pradaxa injuries reported to the FDA increased by more than six times, as the FDA reportedly received 3,290 reports of severe Pradaxa injuries, according to the Institute for Safe Medicine Practices (ISMP). In reviewing these reports, the ISMP found that, while the rate of fatal warfarin injuries was approximately 6.5 percent, the rate of reported fatal Pradaxa injuries was approximately 18 percent.
