The 14 Onglyza lawsuits maintain that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in 2008, directed makers of new type 2 diabetes drugs to demonstrate that their products were not associated with an increased cardiovascular risk. According to the lawsuits, AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals and Bristol-Myers Squibb marketed and sold Onglyza (saxagliptin) for nearly five years before completing a study that found saxagliptin users had a statistically significant increased risk of being hospitalized for heart failure. The Ongylza lawsuits accuse the companies of knowing that their type 2 diabetes drugs can potentially cause cardiac arrest, congestive heart failure and even death, but failed to notify health care providers and patients. The 14 Onglyza personal injury complaints were filed on May 2.

Saxagliptin is a generic drug marketed as Onglyza and Kombiglyze XR. Onglyza was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2009 and Kombiglyze XR (saxagliptin and metformin hydrochloride extended-release) in 2010. Onglyza and Kombiglyze are part of a class of prescription drugs called dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors. DPP-4 inhibitors, along with diet and exercise, lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes by inhibiting natural enzymes in the body that reduce insulin production. Insulin helps move sugar from the blood into the tissues so the body can use the sugar to produce energy and keep blood sugar levels stable.

In April 2016, the FDA added heart failure warnings to the safety labels of type 2 diabetes medicines containing saxagliptin and alogliptin. According to the FDA, a large clinical trial found that 3.5 percent of patients taking saxagliptin were hospitalized with heart failure compared to 2.8 percent of patients on a placebo. This is not the only time saxagliptin has come under the FDA’s scrutiny. In 2013, the FDA began investigating reports of pancreatic and thyroid cancers as side effects of saxagliptin and other incretin mimetic drugs prescribed for type 2 diabetes. Additionally, the FDA announced in August 2015 that severe and disabling joint pain have been associated with DDP-4 inhibitors. A new warning and precaution was added about the joint pain risk to the labels of DDP-4 inhibitors.
